P2P, Kazaa & the new world
A rare victory for the opponents of p2p was registered in an Aussie court today. Are things as simple as this judgement indicates is what I wonder. My own sentiment is that p2p is here to stay, and making it illegal or banning it is like making misleading advertising or terrorism illegal - easier said than done. More creative means than legislation are required for what is not just a threat (which it of course is) to intellectual property, but also a massive opportunity to reshape culture, and collective life as a whole, as suggested by the views expressed in this article (warning: really long article!), which I am in substantial agreement with.

On First Looks, the new Google Desktop 2
released yesterday (that you can download here) looks real cool!
There is a sidebar at the right of the screen that pulls together email, news, web-clips (rss, atom from news-sites or anywhere), a cool scratch pad, photos on the comp (which are cycled in a slide show!), a quick-viewer for frequently used items, a what's hot (on the web) window, weather & stock tickers (that I junked), plus the google search bar, in small windows stacked on top of each other into a vertical column that takes maybe 10-15% of the screen (can be minimized at the touch of a button). That I can live with.
And since gmail is my mail account of choice for the moment, it all goes well together [If anyone wants a gmail account, email me privately, I have some invites].
So far, so good for First Looks.
